Back pain and sciatica: physiotherapy in Zeist

Lower back pain is the complaint we see most at the Panweg. Sometimes it is a sudden lock-up after lifting, sometimes a dull ache that has been there for months, sometimes pain that shoots into the buttock and leg. The good news: most back pain gets better with the right movement, and we can tell you after one visit which kind you have.

What causes back pain, and why most of it is not serious

In nine out of ten cases back pain comes from muscles, joints and discs that are overloaded or stiff, not from damage. Long days at a desk, a weekend of gardening, a new baby to carry, a bad night: the back protests and the muscles around it tighten. A herniated disc (hernia) or a narrowed canal (stenosis) can cause pain that radiates into the leg, often called sciatica, with tingling or weakness.

Your physiotherapist examines movement, strength and nerve function and tells you which of these it is. Red flags, such as loss of bladder control or weakness in both legs, mean you see a doctor first; we check for them every time.

How we treat back pain at MoveWell Zeist

The first goal is to get you moving without fear. Mobilisation and manual therapy ease the stiff segments, dry needling releases the tight muscles, and you learn which positions and movements calm the pain down. From the second or third session we add training in the exercise room: core stability, hip strength and the movements of daily life, lifting included.

For sciatica we combine nerve mobilisation with a gradual loading programme. If a back needs a chiropractic view, the chiropractors of MoveWell work in the same building and we discuss your case together, often the same day.

Physiotherapy and chiropractic care under one roof

One address at the Panweg, two professions, one plan for your back. That is what makes MoveWell different from a single-discipline practice.

Costs and insurance for back pain

Back pain is treated from supplementary insurance: 62 euros for the first consultation, 47 euros per follow-up, invoiced to your insurer. After some back operations, basic insurance covers rehabilitation from the twenty-first session.

The back complaints we treat most often in Zeist, each with a short description of what we do.

Back complaints we treat

Acute lower back pain

Fysiotherapie Zeist - MoveWell Zeist

A sudden lock-up (spit) after lifting or twisting. We get you moving again in the first session and give you a plan to prevent the next one.

Herniated disc

Fysiotherapie Zeist - MoveWell Zeist

A bulging disc pressing on a nerve, with pain into the leg. Most herniations recover without surgery; we guide that recovery and track nerve function.

Sciatica

Pain, tingling or numbness along the sciatic nerve into the buttock, thigh or calf. Nerve mobilisation, posture and graded loading.

Chronic back pain

Pain that has lasted longer than three months. We look at load, sleep, stress and fitness, and build a training programme that you can keep up.

Back pain from desk work

Fysiotherapie Zeist - MoveWell Zeist

Stiff lower back and hips from sitting. Mobilisation, hip strength and a few changes to your workplace.

Back pain in sport

Fysiotherapie Zeist - MoveWell Zeist

Golf, cycling, running, hockey and swimming each load the back in their own way. We analyse the movement and fix the weak link.

Stenosis

behandeling fysiotherapie na botbreuken

A narrowed spinal canal, usually after sixty, with pain when walking that eases when you bend forward. Training and advice that keep you walking.

After back surgery

Fysiotherapie Zeist - MoveWell Zeist

Rehabilitation after a discectomy or fusion, following the surgeon’s protocol, in our exercise room.

The chiropractor next door

Fysiotherapie Zeist - MoveWell Zeist

For some backs an adjustment by the chiropractor makes the difference. MoveWell Chiropractie Zeist works in the same building.

Three steps to recovery

Step 1: Move

First we restore movement. Pain makes you guard the area, and a joint or muscle that is not used stiffens further. Hands-on treatment, mobilisation and the first gentle exercises get you moving again, usually within the first two or three sessions.

Step 2: Strengthen

Then we build strength and stability. In our exercise room at the Panweg you train the muscles that protect the joint, with a programme set by your physiotherapist and adjusted every visit. This is the part that makes the result last.

Step 3: Function

Finally we make it work in daily life: lifting, sitting at a desk, running, playing with your children. You leave with a short home programme and advice on posture and load, so you know what to do if the complaint ever returns.

Frequently asked questions

Should I rest or move with back pain?

Move. Bed rest makes most back pain worse. Keep walking, change position often and avoid only the movements that clearly provoke the pain. Your physiotherapist shows you which ones.

Do I need an MRI for back pain?

Rarely. Scans show disc bulges in many people without pain, so they often confuse more than they help. We examine you first; if there are signs that a scan is needed, we say so and you go through your GP.

How long does sciatica take to heal?

Most people improve clearly within six to twelve weeks. Nerve pain can take longer to fade completely. Weakness in the foot or leg, or loss of bladder control, needs a doctor straight away.

Physiotherapist or chiropractor for my back?

Often both have something to offer, and at MoveWell you do not have to choose in advance. The physiotherapist examines you, and if an adjustment by the chiropractor would help, we arrange it in the same building.

Is treatment for back pain reimbursed?

From supplementary insurance, yes, for the number of sessions in your package. We invoice the insurer directly.

Can I work with back pain?

Usually yes, with adjustments. Sitting still all day is worse for a sore back than moving around. We help you find a working position and a rhythm of breaks that keeps you going.

Is lifting bad for my back?

No. Lifting badly, suddenly and without training is. A trained back lifts without trouble, and that is what we build towards in the exercise room.
