Physiotherapy costs and insurance in the Netherlands

How much does physiotherapy cost, and who pays? In the Netherlands the answer depends on your insurance policy and on your complaint. This page explains the system in plain terms and lists our rates for 2026 at MoveWell Zeist, so you know where you stand before the first visit.

Our rates for 2026

A first consultation, including examination and treatment plan, costs 62 euros. A follow-up treatment costs 47 euros. A home visit costs 85 euros for the first visit and 67 euros for follow-ups. A diagnostic ultrasound is 32 euros, focal shockwave therapy 14 euros per session on top of the treatment. An appointment missed without twenty-four hours notice is charged at 39 euros and is not reimbursed by insurance.

These are the same rates as at MoveWell Hilversum. If you have Dutch insurance we invoice the insurer directly; you only see a bill for what your policy does not cover.

Basic or supplementary insurance: what covers physiotherapy?

Every resident of the Netherlands has basic insurance (basisverzekering). For adults, basic insurance only covers physiotherapy for conditions on the chronic list (chronische lijst), such as rehabilitation after certain operations, some neurological conditions and chronic joint disease, and even then from the twenty-first session onwards. The first twenty sessions are for your own account or your supplementary insurance.

Most people therefore rely on supplementary insurance (aanvullende verzekering), which reimburses a fixed number of sessions per calendar year, typically between six and unlimited depending on the package. Physiotherapy does not count towards your deductible (eigen risico) when it is paid from supplementary insurance. Children under eighteen get the first nine sessions from basic insurance, and nine more if needed.

Contracts with all Dutch insurers

MoveWell has contracts with every Dutch health insurer. We send the invoice to your insurer; you do not need to pay first and claim later.

No Dutch insurance, or an international policy?

You pay per session, by card or bank transfer, and receive an invoice with the treatment codes your insurer needs. Many expat and international policies reimburse physiotherapy in full or in part; check your policy or ask us for the invoice format you need.

Nine things people ask us about money, answered briefly.

Nine questions about costs

Do I pay a deductible?

Fysiotherapie Zeist - MoveWell Zeist

No. The deductible (eigen risico, 385 euros in 2026) applies to basic insurance only. Physiotherapy from supplementary insurance never touches it. Chronic-list treatment from basic insurance does.

What is the chronic list?

Fysiotherapie Zeist - MoveWell Zeist

A government list of conditions for which basic insurance covers physiotherapy from the twenty-first session, such as rehabilitation after a joint replacement, COPD, Parkinson, MS or a stroke. A referral is required.

How many sessions does supplementary insurance cover?

Between six and unlimited per year, depending on your package. Your insurer’s app shows the number; we can also check it for you.

Is a referral needed for reimbursement?

Not for regular physiotherapy. Insurers reimburse direct-access physiotherapy. A referral is needed for home visits and for chronic-list conditions.

What does a session cost without insurance?

Fysiotherapie Zeist - MoveWell Zeist

62 euros for the first consultation and 47 euros for a follow-up. You get an invoice you can submit elsewhere.

Are ultrasound and shockwave extra?

Fysiotherapie Zeist - MoveWell Zeist

Diagnostic ultrasound is 32 euros and focal shockwave 14 euros per session; both are often partly reimbursed. Radial shockwave and dry needling are part of the treatment.

Does the chiropractor cost the same?

behandeling fysiotherapie na botbreuken

No. Chiropractic care has its own rates and is reimbursed from supplementary insurance under alternative care. See the chiropractic site for details.

What if I miss an appointment?

Fysiotherapie Zeist - MoveWell Zeist

Cancel at least twenty-four hours ahead and nothing is charged. Without notice we charge 39 euros, which insurance does not reimburse.

Can I pay by card?

Fysiotherapie Zeist - MoveWell Zeist

Yes. Card and bank transfer are both fine. If your insurer pays, there is nothing to pay at the desk.

Three steps to recovery

Step 1: Move

First we restore movement. Pain makes you guard the area, and a joint or muscle that is not used stiffens further. Hands-on treatment, mobilisation and the first gentle exercises get you moving again, usually within the first two or three sessions.

Step 2: Strengthen

Then we build strength and stability. In our exercise room at the Panweg you train the muscles that protect the joint, with a programme set by your physiotherapist and adjusted every visit. This is the part that makes the result last.

Step 3: Function

Finally we make it work in daily life: lifting, sitting at a desk, running, playing with your children. You leave with a short home programme and advice on posture and load, so you know what to do if the complaint ever returns.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a physiotherapy session cost in the Netherlands?

Rates are set per practice. At MoveWell Zeist a first consultation costs 62 euros and a follow-up treatment 47 euros in 2026. Most practices in the region charge between 40 and 65 euros per session.

Does basic insurance cover physiotherapy?

Only for conditions on the chronic list, and only from the twenty-first session. For everything else you need supplementary insurance or you pay yourself.

Does physiotherapy count towards my deductible?

Not when it is reimbursed from supplementary insurance. Chronic-list physiotherapy from basic insurance does count towards the deductible of 385 euros.

I have an expat or international health plan. Can I come?

Yes. You pay per session and receive an itemised invoice for your insurer. Tell the front desk which format your insurer needs.

Which insurers does MoveWell have contracts with?

All Dutch health insurers, including Zilveren Kruis, CZ, VGZ, Menzis, DSW, ONVZ, ASR and their labels.

Do I have to pay at the first visit?

Not if you have Dutch insurance that covers physiotherapy; we invoice the insurer. Without cover you pay per session, by card or bank transfer, and receive an invoice.

Are the sessions I used elsewhere this year deducted?

Yes. Supplementary insurance counts all physiotherapy sessions in a calendar year, at any practice. Your insurer’s app shows how many you have left; we can check it with you.
